yellow submarine cheesesteak & pastrami subs

the yellow submarine, irving & 6th ave, san francisco

The Yellow Submarine, in the Inner Sunset neighborhood of SF, is a sandwich shop that I've meant to write about numerous times, yet somehow I've never actually followed through on it.  The first time I went, several years ago, I got the italian cold cuts sub that they make, and I wasn't terribly impressed.  I remember thinking that the bread was too dry, which is a reaction I often have to submarine style sandwiches- the sweet rolls that are typically used are very fluffy and insubstantial, leaving me wanting something more to sink my teeth into.  I don't go to the Inner Sunset too often, so it was a long time before I had a chance to reevaluate my opinion of the Yellow Submarine.  But when I finally returned, I decided to follow the advice of online reviews I'd read and try one of the hot sandwiches.  I'm glad I did, because I thought this cheesesteak was great, and definitely good enough to change my opinion of the Yellow Submarine.  The roll was still very light, but it mattered less when paired with hot and flavorful beef and melted cheese.

El's pastrami sub was delicious as well, although the saltiness was much more present than in the cheesesteak. We also thought the fries were good, but felt like the potato salad was pretty bland.  I wish I remembered more about these sandwiches, but it was months and months ago that Els and I ate them.  Fortunately for me, we have an errand to run in the Inner Sunset this afternoon, giving me a good excuse to write this review, and to visit the Yellow Submarine to refresh my memory!

  1. for some reason my comment got killed by my iphone but an unlikley place for good sandwiches in the Inner Funset is in fact....pasquale's the pizza place.

It sounds insane, but a friend of mine came to SF to watch the Giants Playoffs with me and she ordered their ribeye steak sandwich. It was deceptively simple, but amazing they have this great bread they cook in the pizza oven and the steak is amazing.

Others have tried the other sandwiches and they really are something. The pizza there is good too, but I tend to stick to the sandwiches as I live around the corner. Anyway, check it out sometime when you're in our neighborhood.
